Azoheteroarenes, analogues of azobenzene photoswitches that possess one or more heteroarene rings, are becoming increasingly adopted for a variety of applications. This chapter details the various synthetic strategies that have been adopted to access azoheteroarenes, followed by an analysis of the key structure-property relationships that have been elucidated to date. Ultimately, we aim to survey how rational design of these photoswitches can lead to control over specific properties. We go on to discuss applications and research fields that employ azoheteroarenes, which include photopharmacology, molecular electronics, supramolecular chemistry, and energy-storage materials.
